Water Treatment Plant Operator (OIT, 1,2,3)
Under direct or general supervision of the Water Operations Superintendent or Water Foreman, operates, repairs and maintains the District’s water treatment facilities, including water treatment and distribution systems; reads and interprets charts and meter readings for analyzing the efficiency of plant operations; maintain chemical inventory; and performs other related work as required.

Minimum Requirements (OIT): 

  • Employment application must be filled out accurately and completely in order to be considered.
  • Valid California driver’s license, have a satisfactory driving record, and be insurable by the District to operate District vehicles.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment selection process, background investigation, reference checks, post-offer physical and drug screening.
  • Hazardous Materials Endorsement or obtain within six months from hire date.
  • Current California Water Treatment Operator Grade T1 certification issued by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) or obtain within 12 months, or by the second attempt at taking the State exam if taken within the first two possible exam periods, whichever is later, of hire date.
  • Ability to perform sometimes strenuous, manual labor often exposed to inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to drive in all weather conditions.

Typical Work Hours:
6:00 AM – 4:30 PM, 4/10 schedule including one weekend day. Also requires after hours, weekends and holidays.  Schedule subject to change as required, to meet the needs of the District.

Job Description

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of construction, maintenance and repair work on water and wastewater distribution, collection, treatment and disposal systems and facilities.  Assists and performs work in the installation, maintenance and repair of water and sewer pipelines, services, and appurtenances, fire hydrants, and other District facilities.  Performs other related work as required.

Education and Certification Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Must obtain California Water Distribution Operator certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board within required, specific period of time.  
  • Valid Class A or B driver license, or obtain within a specific period of time, have a satisfactory driving record, and be insurable by the District to operate District vehicles.

Special Testing:
Drug/Alcohol Testing:        This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing requirements of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991, under the administration of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT).

Experience:                          Experience in underground and above ground construction, working on installation, testing, maintenance and repair of pipelines and facilities.

Work Hours:
7:00 a.m. to 3:30  p.m.; five consecutive workdays.  Subject to change, as required to meet the needs of the District.  Must be willing to work holidays, overtime and/or alternate schedule when required.  Utility Worker 2 and higher is  required to participate in the on-call standby rotation on a regular basis.
