FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH, 2025

Tuolumne Utilities District (TUD) will be conducting sewer smoke testing in the Spanish Grant area of Mono Vista on Wednesday, November 19th through Friday, November 21st, 2025, between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., weather permitting.

What to Expect During the Testing

Residents may observe smoke emanating from manholes, sewer cleanouts, roof vents, rain gutters and the ground. The smoke is non-toxic, harmless, and will not leave any residue. TUD advises adding water to infrequently used drains to ensure the traps remain full, thereby preventing smoke from potentially entering your home.

TUD may require access to manholes and/or cleanouts in backyards.  Please have these areas accessible, ensuring gates are unlocked and pets are in a safe location.  If TUD personnel must enter your property, their presence will be as brief as possible. For any special arrangements, please contact the office.

What is Sewer Smoke Testing?

Sewer smoke testing is a method used to identify defects in the sewer system. Non-toxic smoke is blown into the sewer lines and will escape through vent pipes on roofs or any cracks, leaks, or faulty connections, highlighting areas that may need repair.

Why is Sewer Smoke Testing Important?

This testing helps the District to:

  • Identify and repair leaks in the sewer system.
  • Locate points of entry of groundwater and rainwater.
  • Reduce the risk of sewer backups and overflows.
  • Improve the overall efficiency of the sewer system.
