Tuolumne Utilities District (TUD or District) began construction on the Gopher Water Tank Replacement Project, a new 600,000-gallon steel welded water storage tank. The project consists of constructing a new water storage tank and treated water pump station, demolishing the failing Gopher Tank, and installing a new Pressure Reducing Station. The new Gopher Tank will serve the Racetrack, Gibbs, and Saratoga communities of Sonora.
The TUD Board of Directors awarded the construction of the water tank to Njirich & Sons, Inc. (Njirich) on May 12, 2020. Grading work at the new tank site started last week in preparation for the new tank. Njirich crews will work through the summer on the site grading, pump station, underground piping, and demolition of the Gopher Tank. Crosno Construction, a tank manufacturer from Arroyo Grande and a subcontractor of Njirich & Sons, Inc., will begin constructing the tank late summer 2020.
The project is funded by a $1.7 million Community Development Block Grant for engineering, inspection, geotechnical investigations, and electric service to the site. The project was designed by District staff and will be completed this fall.
