Phoenix Lake Preservation and Restoration Projects

Phoenix Lake

The Phoenix Lake Preservation and Restoration Project restored critical water storage capacity and improved water quality at Phoenix Lake, one of Tuolumne Utilities District’s primary drinking water sources serving the communities of Sonora, Jamestown, Scenic View, and Mono Village. The project addressed decades of sediment accumulation that had significantly reduced the reservoir’s storage capacity and contributed to declining water quality, invasive aquatic vegetation, and operational challenges for water treatment.

The completed project included the removal of accumulated sediment from the reservoir, wetland and habitat enhancements, tributary and sediment management improvements, and measures designed to reduce future sediment deposition. These improvements increased available water storage, enhanced water circulation, improved water quality conditions, and strengthened the long-term reliability of TUD’s largest water system serving more than 10,000 residents.

In addition to water supply benefits, the project enhanced aquatic habitat, protected wetland resources, and improved the scenic and recreational value of the lake. The multi-year effort was supported through state grant funding and extensive environmental planning, resulting in a more resilient and sustainable reservoir for the community.
